Saint Leo, Fla. (March 18, 2008) – The No. 29 Saint Leo women’s tennis team (4-5) swept Southern Arkansas University 9-0 Tuesday afternoon at the SLU Tennis Center.

The Lions rolled in doubles competition wining all three matches. The Lions’ duo of Lina Benkirane (So., Casablanca, Morocco) and Asmaa Tazi (Jr., Casablanca, Morocco) controlled their match against the Mulerider No. 1 tandem of Meaghan Ocanas and Ana Gonzalez 8-3. No. 2 position pair of Shaena Keefe (So., Spring Hill, Fla.) and Taylor Cleaves (So., Norwell, Mass.) won a close match against Muleriders’ No. 2 position pair Rachel Vinsant and Caitlin Korensek 8-5. The No. 3 position pair of Veronica Queen (Fr., Valrico, Fla.) and Gina Schifano (So., Tampa, Fla.) secured an 8-2 win over Aneeka Bhalla and Megan Phinny.

The momentum never left the side of the Lions, as they finished off a sweep of the Muleriders in singles action. Benkriane handed Ana Gonzalez the first loss of singles 6-3, 6-2 while Tazi conquered Vinsant 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2. In the No. 3 singles spot, Keefe defeated Ocanas in straight sets 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5). Queen wasted no time in her match against Bhalla in the No.4 singles spot winning 6-2, 6-1. In the No. 5 singles spot, Schifano used three sets and the super tiebreaker to triumph in her match over Korensek 7-5, 3-6, 10-3. Cleaves closed the Lions sweep in the No. 6 singles spot defeating Brooke Grigsby 6-2, 6-3.
