Saint Leo, Fla. (April 30, 2008) – The Saint Leo University women’s tennis team (13-10) was selected to participate in the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championships, it was announced on Wednesday. The Lions were selected to the 64-team field for the first time in program history, and will face Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. on Friday, May 9 at 9:00 a.m.
Lynn University and Barry were the top two seeds in the southeast region and will host the first two rounds of the Championships at their respective on-campus facilities. The winner of the Saint Leo-Barry match will move on to the second round where they will face either Rollins or Tusculum.
Saint Leo earned its first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament after a historic season in 2008. The Lions were 13-10 overall and finished sixth in the final regular season Sunshine State Conference standings and in the SSC Tournament. Along the way, Saint Leo had its first two SSC Players of the Week (Gina Schifano and Veronica Queen), and also had junior Asmaa Tazi (Casablanca, Morocco) named Second Team All-Sunshine State Conference.
The 16 first- and second-round tournaments will be conducted May 8-9 or 9-10, with the winner of each first- and second-round tournament advancing to the finals in Houston, Texas, with the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority and Rice University serving as co-hosts, May 14-17.
The selection of teams for the championships is based on prescribed criteria listed in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships Handbook and approved by the NCAA Division II Championships Committee.
