Palm Beach, Fla. (April 4, 2008) – The No. 29 Saint Leo women’s tennis team (9-6) triumphed over the Northwood University Seahawks Friday afternoon by the score of 5-4.
The Lions were victorious in two of three matches in doubles competition to start the afternoon. The No. 1 duo of Lina Benkirane (So., Casablanca, Morocco) and Asmaa Tazi (Jr., Casablanca, Morocco) rolled past the Northwood pair of Alejandra Ripoll and Michelle Aybar 8-1. The Lions dropped their second match as the No. 2 pair of Taylor Cleaves (So., Norwell, Mass.) and Shaena Keefe (So., Spring Hill, Fla.) fell 8-1 to Mikela Seger and Fiorella Moggia. The No. 3 Lions’ duo of Veronica Queen (Fr., Valrico, Fla.) and Gina Schifano (So., Tampa, Fla.) edged out the Seahawk pair of Adriana Herron and Did Juman 8-6 to put the Lions up 2-1 in the match.
The Lions and Seahawks split singles action three matches apiece. The Lions picked up the first point of singles action, as the No. 1 position player, Benkirane, defeated Ripoll In three sets 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. Tazi was also taken to three sets in the No. 2 position but came out victorious over Seger 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. The Seahawks rallied off three straight points to get back in the match. Herron defeated Keefe 6-1, 6-2 Moggia took down Queen 6-0, 6-1 and Michelle Aybar was victorious over Schifano 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. The tied match came down to the final pairing, as Cleaves came out on top in a hard fought three-set victory over Tess Svensson 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. The Lions picked up their second straight victory.
