Lakeland, Fla. (April 19, 2008) - The No. 29 Saint Leo University women's tennis team (13-10) fell 5-1 to No. 14 Florida Southern College (16-6) in the fifth-place match at the Sunshine State Conference Tournament on Saturday morning.  Southern finished fifth while Saint Leo finished sixth in the post-season tournament, matching their regular season finishes.

Southern got off to an early lead, winning two out of three doubles matches.  All three doubles matches were close, but the Lions were only able to get a win in the number three spot, as Veronica Queen (Fr., Valrico, Fla.) and Gina Schifano (So., Tampa, Fla.) beat the FSC pair of Nora Baertschi and Veronika Kovacikova 8-6.

The Mocs clinched the win with singles victories at number one, four and six.  No. 18 ranked Senka Softic defeated Saint Leo number one Lina Benkirane (So., Casablanca, Morocco) in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.  Erin Conroy also posted a straight sets win over Queen at number three, while Kovacikova was a straight sets winner over Taylor Cleaves (So., Norwell, Mass.) in the six spot.

Saint Leo will now await the NCAA Regional selections to find out if the Lions will reach the post-season for the first time in program history.  SLU was ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Southeast Region poll with the top eight teams selected from the region.
