Davie, Fla. (March 2, 2008) – The No. 40 Saint Leo women’s tennis team (3-4, 1-2 SSC) fell on the road to the Nova Southeastern Sharks (3-2, 3-1 SSC) Sunday afternoon 6-3.
The Lions opened doubles competition losing two of three matches. The No. 1 pair of Lina Benkirane (So., Casablanca, Morocco) and Asmaa Tazi (Jr., Casablanca, Morocco) lost a hard fought match against Alexa Korotkevich and Ulia Talalenko 8-6. The Nova No. 2 pair of Tsippy Waterman and Edita Kulichova took down the Lions’ pair of Taylor Cleaves (So., Norwell, Mass.) and Shaena Keefe (So., Spring Hill, Fla.) 8-3. The Lions picked up their first point of the dayin the No. 3 position, as Gina Schifano (So., Tampa, Fla.) and Veronica Queen (Fr., Valrico, Fla.) upended Elena Vahl and Miranda Falzone 8-4.
Singles action proved unfavorable for the Lions, as well. Benkirane was defeated by Talalenko 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 1 position. Tazi also dropped her contest against Korotkevich in the No. 2 position 6-2, 6-2. Keefe fell in a heartbreaker to Waterman 7-5, 7-5 in the No. 3 spot. The No. 4 position witnessed Queen drop a tough match to the Sharks’ Kulichova 6-3, 6-3. The Lions added their two points in the final two singles matches. Schifano rolled past Falzone 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 5 position Cleaves pounced on Vahl winning her match 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 6 position.
