Saint Leo, Fla. (April 7, 2008) – The No. 29 Saint Leo women’s tennis team (11-6, 3-4 SSC) defeated the University of Tampa Spartans (8-12, 0-7 SSC) 8-1 Monday afternoon at the SLU Tennis Complex.

The SLU women dominated play all afternoon beginning with an impressive showing in doubles competition. The Lions won two out of three matches with their lone loss coming out of the No.2 position. The Lions picked up their first point of the day, as the duo of Lina Benkirane (So., Casablanca, Morocco) and Asmaa Tazi (Jr., Casablanca, Morocco) made quick work of their Spartan opponents Estefania Greco and Kourtney Stark, putting them down 8-0. The second Lions’ point came from the No.3 doubles spot where the pair of Veronica Queen (Fr., Valrico, Fla.) and Gina Schifano (So., Tampa, Fla.) rolled past the duo of Ally Wooten and Lindsey Garyn 8-4. The Spartans one point of the match came from the University of Tampa pair of Caitlin Scudder and Emily Kennedy defeating the Saint Leo duo of Shaena Keefe (So., Spring Hill, Fla.) and Taylor Cleaves (So., Norwell, Mass.) 8-1.

The Lions swept through singles portion of the day. The No. 1 singles spot saw Benkirane outplay Greco winning in two sets 6-4, 6-4. Tazi edged out the Stark 6-3, 7-5 in No. 2 doubles competition.  Keefe was very impressive in her rout of the Spartans’ Garyn in the No. 3 winning 6-1, 6-0.  Queen added to the Lions point total winning her match 6-1, 6-3 over Scudder. In the No. 5 position, Schifano bettered Tampa’s Kennedy 6-3, 6-4. After losing the first set 5-7, Cleaves marched on to victory winning the second set 6-0 and the super tiebreaker 10-1.

The Lions continue their SSC schedule Wednesday, April 9 against the Rollins College Tars at the SLU Tennis Center starting at 3:00 p.m.
