Saint Leo, Fla. (February 28, 2008) – The Saint Leo women’s tennis team (3-3) extended their winning streak to three after sweeping University of Puerto Rio – Rio Piedras Thursday afternoon at the SLU Tennis Center.
The Lions took to the court riding a two game winning streak and when doubles action ended the hopes of a third straight victory was in their grasp. The Lions duo of Lina Benkirane (So. Casablanca, Morocco) and Asmaa Tazi (Jr. Casablanca, Morocco) started the scoring early and often as they trekked on to victory defeating Desiree Perez and Andrea Lopez, 8-1 to put the finishing touches on the Lions sweep of doubles action.
The Lions also picked up strong performances in singles competition. Asmaa Tazi and Veronica Queen led the way for the Lions as they provided the most dominant performances on the day for Saint Leo. Number two player, Asmaa Tazi defeated Andrea Lopez 6-2, 6-0 in straight sets, while the Lions number four player Veronica Queen (Fr. Valrico, Fla.) followed Tazi’s performance with a straight set defeat of Puerto-Rico Rio-Piedras’ Suzette Melendez 6-0, 6-3.
The Lions have now swept two consecutive opponents.
The women return to the court Saturday, March 1 at 12:00 p.m. for a non-conference match-up with Nova Southeastern University.
