Garriock claims 100 Free title at SSC Swim meet

ORLANDO, Fla. – Saint Leo junior Natalia Garriock took first place in the women's 100 Freestyle to cap Sunday night's event finals at the 2017 Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships at the Orlando YMCA Aquatic Center.

Garriock captured the 100 Free with an NCAA "B" qualifying time of 50.58 seconds, posting her second event title of the championship in the process. She won the 100 Butterfly in Friday night's championship session.

Freshman Annie Lindstrom placed fourth in the 100 Freestyle, touching the wall in 51.06 seconds. Senior Nicole Weber also recorded a fourth-place finish in the finals of the 200 Breaststroke, posting a time of 2:18.25.

Junior Maftuna Tuhtasinova finished fifth in the 200 Backstroke, hitting the touchpad in 2:03.94.

Saint Leo finished the women's competition by placing second in the 400 Free Relay. The team of Garriock, Lindstrom, Mattie Shaver, and Olga Britton posted a time of 3:26.68, a better than four-and-a-half second improvement over their seed time.

In the men's 400 Free Relay, the Saint Leo team of Bains, Luka Vulic, Michael Southward, and Christian Cioffi posted a time of 3:01.22 and finished fifth overall.

On the men's side, junior Hunter Bains was the lone Saint Leo swimmer who advanced to an event final where he finished fourth in the men's 100 Freestyle. Bains clocked an NCAA "B" standard time of 44.54, missing third place by just .20 seconds.

Also competing in Sunday's final session were sophomore Sidney Martin and freshman Siobhan Murphy in the 200 Breaststroke consolation race. Martin recorded a time of 2:24.27 to place ninth overall in the event, while Murphy was 16th overall with her consolation swim time of 2:31.08.

Sophomore Kane Klimczak qualified for the men's 200 Backstroke consolation swim, and posted a time of 1:56.64 to finish 16th overall in the event.

In the overall team standings, the Saint Leo women's swim team was fourth out of seven teams with 467.00 points, while the Saint Leo men were fifth out of six teams with 281.50 points.
