CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's and women's swim teams completed the second day of the Sunshine State Conference Championships, Thursday evening from the Long Center in Clearwater, Fla.
The women concluded day two in fifth place with 127 points, while the men wrapped-up action in fourth place with 173 points. The second day events included the 200-Yard Free Relay, 500 Yard Free, 200-Yard IM, 50-Yard Free, and 400-Yard Medley Relay. Allison Cary, Sandra Stopczynska, Chloe Pellican, and Kaitlyn Hite came in with a B-Final time of 4:06.69 in the final relay of the day.
The Sharks top the women's point totals with 391 points, followed by Tampa with 330. Florida Southern is third (260), Rollins is fourth (151), Saint Leo is fifth (127), and Florida Tech is sixth (57).
The Lions saw a fifth-place finish out of the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay team of Sarah Thompson, Lindsay Albanese, Sarah Earls, and Katie David, finishing with a mark of 1:51.83. The foursome of Thompson, Bianca Muniz, Kristy Marques, and Earls closed out the evening with another fifth-place touch, coming in with a time of 4:20.90 in the 400-Yard Medley Relay.
Individually, Stopczynska touched 12th in the 200-Yard IM with a time of 2:12.30, while Kaitlyn Hite finished three spots behind with a mark of 2:15.37.
Nova Southeastern leads the men's competition with 398 points. Florida Southern is second with 312, followed by Tampa (252), Saint Leo (173), Rollins (143) and Florida Tech (103).
Michael Cozzi earned an eighth-place finish in the 500-Yard Free, touching with an NCAA "B" Cut time of 4:41.65.
Senior Tim Olson brought home the top time in the 50-Yard Freestyle, coming in with a mark of 20.65, good for NCAA "B" Cut standards. Gabe Keown also earned a "B" Cut time in the same event, finishing eighth with a time of 21.20.
The men's squad finished the evening with another "B" Cut time in the 400-Yard Medley Relay, as the combo of Rhet Rheinlander, Derek Maddigan, Olson, and Keown picked up fourth with a time of 3:23.99.
Carl Roycroft and Maddigan finished 15th and 16th, respectively in the 200-Yard IM, coming in with times of 1:57.14 and 2:01.89.
The SSC Swimming Championship continues on Friday, February 17. Preliminaries in the 400 IM, 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, and 100 Backstroke will be swam at 10 a.m. Finals for each of those events, along with the 200 Medley relay, will begin at 6 p.m. For the latest news, updates, and information on the Saint Leo men's and women's swimming teams, visit SaintLeoLions.com.
