Women’s soccer claims SSC title; Lions rout Sailfish 4-0 Sunday

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo women's soccer team defeated Palm Beach Atlantic 4-0 on Sunday, Oct. 30 to claim the Sunshine State Conference regular season title finish atop the conference standings with a 7-1-1 record in the SSC.

With the win, the Lions sit atop the SSC with 22 points and won the SSC title outright, and will now earn a bye to Friday's SSC tournament semifinals. Saint Leo will play host to the tournament after winning the SSC and will play Nov. 4 at 4:30 p.m. The second game of the night will take place at 7 p.m.

"I am happy for the seniors to earn this win and SSC title," Head Coach Ged O'Connor stated. "It was a great team effort, as well as all season. The girls played hard and we look to the SSC tournament at home this week.

The Lions received goals from Katie Waddell, Genevieve Gignac, Natalie Melillo and Arielle Kabangu where Selena Jaimes and Sara Hemmer each tallied one assist in the win.

Saint Leo outshot the Sailfish 16-9 and earned seven corners to zero for Palm Beach Atlantic. Keeper Megan Charlton picked up the win in goal with three saves on three shots on goal from the Sailfish.

The Lions used a four-goal first half to propel themselves to the Sunshine State Conference title.

Katie Waddell hit the first goal, and what goes in as the now game-winner, in the fourth minute after Selena Jaimes played a ball in from around midfield. Waddell chased the ball down after it bounced over the head of Arielle Kabangu to put the Lions up early in the contest. | SLU 1-0 |

Points to Note

  • With the win, the Lions took home their second SSC regular season title. This is the second title in program history, with the first one back in 2011. 
  • Saint Leo ended regular season play with an 11-3-1, 7-1-1 SSC record after defeating Palm Beach Atlantic 4-0 Sunday afternoon, in the last SSC women's soccer game being played.
  • Saint Leo will host the 2016 SSC Women's Soccer tournament on Nov. 4 and 6. Game times are 4:30 p.m. on the 4th and 1 p.m. on the 6th. The Lions will take on the winner of No. 4 Rollins/No.5 Tampa on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Click here for all SSC women's soccer tournament information
  • The Lions honored their seven seniors before the game, where all seven seniors saw action in the contest.
  • Arielle Kabangu scored her 15th goal of the year and 64th of her career in the 39th minute.
  • Genevieve Gignac scored her fifth goal of the season and 25th in her career to put the Lions up 2-0 in the 25th minute.
  • Katie Waddell scored her fifth goal of the year and 21st of her career in the fourth minute and tallied her fifth career game-winning goal.
  • Natalie Melillo scored her fifth goal in the Green and Gold in the 28th minute of the contest.
  • Selena Jaimes tallied her third assist of the year while Sara Hemmer picked up her first assist of her career.
  • Keeper Megan Charlton moved to 6-3-1 after the win in goal. Charlton saved every shot she saw come towards the goal from the Sailfish.

For the Opponent – Palm Beach Atlantic

  • PBA, playing their third game in five days, fell 4-0 to the Lions. The Sailfish move to 5-9-1, 2-6-1 SSC.
  • Keepers Isabelle Granlund and Alexis Sanquist both saw time in goal after Granlund got the start but left the game due to an injury. Granlund took the loss, moving to 4-7-1 after recording four saves and allowing four goals. Sanquist picked up one save in the 46:21 minutes played.  

Saint Leo will host the semifinals and championship game of the 2016 Sunshine State Conference Women's Soccer Tournament on Nov. 4 and 6. The Lions will play Friday, Nov. 4 at 4:30 p.m. where the second semifinal game will commence at 7 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6. All game will be played at University Soccer Field on the campus of Saint Leo University.
