Gignac, Melillo, Waddell lifts women’s soccer over Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. – After 10 days off from competition, the Saint Leo women's soccer team traveled to Catawba and knocked off the Indians 4-1 at E.B. Frock Field on Wednesday evening. The Lions saw goals from Natalie Melillo, Katie Waddell, and Genevieve Gignac.

The Lions and the Indians were deadlocked on total shots with Catawba holding a one-shot advantage, 11-10. Melillo scored two goals Wednesday night where Gignac and Waddell each had one.

Waddell added one assist to her plate in the victory to finish the game with three points, one shy of Melillo, who had four. Gignac finished the game with two points

Catawba took a 1-0 lead in the first 22 minutes before the Lions came back to tie before halftime. Saint Leo went on to win 4-1 over the Indians.

Points to Note

  • Saint Leo moves to 8-2-0, 4-1-0 SSC after the non-conference victory at Catawba.
  • The Lions came from behind once again, after dropping down 1-0 in the first 22 minutes. Saint Leo has fought back in six of their 10 games.
  • The Lions were awarded four corners on the night while giving up six. Saint Leo committed 12 fouls.
  • Keeper Megan Charlton picked up the victory to move to 3-1 on the season. Charlton tallied four saves in the 79:56 minutes played.
  • Julia Ortiz came in relief and played 10:04 and game up no goals on one shot.
  • The Lions scored four unanswered goals after trailing 1-0 early in the contest.

For the Opponent – Catawba

  • Catawba dropped to 6-4-1 on the season after the 4-1 defeat on their home field.
  • Shelby Vasich scored the lone goal in the 22nd minute of the game.
  • Keepers Shelby Thompson and Shannon Hardy shared duties in goal, each playing 45 minutes. Thompson got the start and gave up one goal on six shots with one save. Hardy tallied one save on four shots faceed, allowing three goals.

Saint Leo returns to Sunshine State Conference play when they travel to Embry-Riddle on Saturday, Oct. 15 for a 6 p.m. kick.
