Women's soccer downs Valdosta State, 7-0

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's soccer team used a balanced offensive performance to take down the visiting Valdosta State Blazers, 7-0, in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions saw 23 different student-athletes see time in the game, and 10 different athletes contribute directly to the offense. Saint Leo saw goals from Rosie Young, Chelsea Reid, Victoria Covas, Arielle Kabangu, Sofie Haellsten, and two goals from Lindsey Perkins. Katie Waddell dished out two assists, while Kabangu, Rakeisha Sealy, Brooke Snoll, and Kayla Pereira all provided an assist.

Saint Leo was also able to provide a clean slate with a mix of defensive players, including Cassidy Place, who returned to the Lions lineup for the first time in over a year after dealing with injury. Place was the lone Lion to play the full 90 minutes.

How It Happened

Following an aggressive read by the Blazers keepers, the Lions saw a chance at an open net as VSU's keeper tripped making her way back to her line. A cross was sent in at the same moment the keeper fell, and the ball bobbled around the box before Rosie Young poked it into the back of the net to start the Lions off right. | SLU 1-0

29' | Katie Waddell danced her way up the center of the field making cheeky move after move, dishing the ball to Arielle Kabangu. Kabangu then threaded the ball to Chelsea Reid, who was able to put her strike in the back of the net. | SLU 2-0

46' | The second half opened up quick as the Lions saw defender Victoria Covas lead a charge in the opening minute. Covas carried the ball up the sideline before dishing it off to the foot of Rakeisha Sealy. Sealy struck a solid shot, the rebounded straight off the cross bar. The rebound found Covas' foot, and the junior shot it straight by the keeper. | SLU 3-0

68' | Waddell again used her cheeky foot skills to move around the Blazer defenders, dishing a pass off to Kabangu who easily got it by the visiting keeper. | SLU 4-0

82' | Brooke Snoll dished off a pass to Lindsey Perkins, and Perkins used her powerful shot and drove in another for the Lions. | SLU 5-0

87' | Freshman Sofie Haellsten knocked in her first career goal after a scramble play by Valdosta's defense left the ball right at her food. The rookie used her skills to put it right past the keeper. | SLU 6-0

Just a minute later, freshman Kayla Pereira used her speed and made her way up the sideline. She was able to dish a beauty of a cross to the foot of Perkins, who stuck in her second of the game. | SLU 7-0

Points to Note

  • Perkins' pair of goals were the first of the season for the forward.
  • Haellsten, Covas, Reid and Young also connected on their first goals of the season.
  • Junior Megan Charlton earned the win in net, recording four saves. Courtney Levitt relieved Charlton with 20 minutes to play and recorded two saves.
  • Waddell tallied two assists on the day.

For the Opponent – Valdosta State

  • Kayla Robles led the way with four shots, two on goal.
  • Keeper Alyssa Curtis recorded four saves.   

Saint Leo will host Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.
