Melillo and Ortiz snare SSC weekly honors

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo women's soccer players Natalie Melillo and Julia Ortiz were each rewarded with Sunshine State Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week honors, when the conference's weekly accolades were announced Monday.

Melillo was tabbed as the SSC Offensive Player of Week for her five-point effort over a pair of Saint Leo wins last week. The junior from Nutley, N.J., accounted for what proved to be the game-winning goal in the Lions' 4-1 win over SSC rival Eckerd College last Wednesday. At Lynn on Saturday, Melillo netted the equalizer in the 82nd minute and assisted on the game-winner three minutes into the first overtime session in a 2-1 victory over the Fighting Knights.

Melillo is the first Saint Leo player to earn SSC women's soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors since September 29, 2014, when Saffron Jordan received the award.

Ortiz earned the nod as SSC Defensive Player of the Week after playing in goal for both Saint Leo wins last week. A freshman from Bradenton, Fla., Ortiz tallied three saves and allowed one goal in the win over Eckerd, and stopped five shots in the triumph over Lynn.

With the two wins last week, Saint Leo improved to 4-1-0 overall, 2-0-0 in the SSC.

The Lions are on the road this week for their next contest on Wednesday, Sept. 21, when they travel to Melbourne, Fla., to face Florida Tech. That game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
