Joe Connon Named Assistant Coach for Women’s Soccer
Connon comes to Saint Leo after four seasons at Lynn University
SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo University head women's soccer coach Ged O'Connor announced the hiring of Joe Connon as the program's new assistant coach.
"We are excited that Joe has decided to join the Saint Leo family," said O'Connor. "His coaching and playing background are first class, and we have been able to acquire a coach who is fundamentally driven to win on the soccer field and in the classroom. His main focus will be recruiting, especially with his extensive contacts."
"I am extremely excited to become a member of the Saint Leo family," said Connon. "I would like to thank Coach O'Connor for the opportunity to be a part of what is a top team in the Sunshine State Conference. This is a university that is on the rise, not only academically but athletically as well. I enjoyed all four seasons I spent at Lynn University, and am very grateful for all their support."
Connon began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant with the Lynn University women's soccer team prior to the 2010 season and moved into a full-time role in 2012.
In his role as lead assistant, Connon handled all aspects of coaching, including planning practices, recruiting and scouting opponents while also heading up the team's community service efforts.
Additionally, he provided much of the coaching for the Fighting Knights on the defensive side of the ball. During his time at Lynn, the Fighting Knights improved its goals-against average from seventh to fourth in the Sunshine State Conference during the 2011 season.
Connon's extensive time in the Sunshine State Conference will certainly be an asset in his role at Saint Leo.
"One of the main strengths that Joe brings to Saint Leo is his knowledge of the Sunshine State Conference," said O'Connor. "He can come in and hit the ground running, and has as strong idea of the competition we will face."
Connon was a four-year letterwinner at Missouri Baptist, and earned NAIA All-America Honorable Mention honors as a freshman.
A native of Ireland, Connon played for his country's U15 national team as a youth and coached for numerous teams in his native land.
Connon graduated in 2007 from Missouri Baptist with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology, and completed his Master's in Business Administration with a specialization in sports management from Lynn in May of 2012.
Connon replaces former Saint Leo assistant coach Annie Hamel who moved on to become the head coach at Simon Frazer University in Vancouver, Canada.
"This was a great opportunity for her (Hamel) and we are sure that she will bring great success to the school there as a head coach," said O'Connor.
