Kabangu Earns Daktronics All-Region First Team Honors

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Led by a Saint Leo freshman, a total of 14 Sunshine State Conference women's soccer players were named to the 2013 Daktronics All-South Region Women's Soccer Team.  Arielle Kabangu was the lone Lions' representative, but earned a First-Team nod and was runner-up for Player of the Year honors.

A freshman from Ottawa, Canada, Kabangu led the SSC in scoring with 22 goals and 49 points. Her 22 goals were the most among Division II, while her 49 points ranked her second in the nation. Kabangu averaged a conference-best 3.06 points per game and 1.38 goals per game during the regular season. She was also third in the SSC with five game-winning goals.

Rollins led the way for the SSC with five selections, including two first-team honorees. Midfielder Paxton Sickler and defender Taylor Thigpen were named to the first team for the Tars. Forward Brenna McKee, midfielder Emma Jones and defender Azure Dorsey were named to the second team.

Tampa also had two first-team selections, including forward Cici Gonzalez and defender Shannon Walisch. The Spartans' midfielder Gabby Russo was named to the second team.

Barry's midfielder Lavina Nkomo and Saint Leo's forward Arielle Kabangu were also named to the All-South Region First Team. Kabangu was named runner-up in the South Region Player of the Year voting. West Florida's Chelsea Palmer was crowned the region's player of the year.

Also making second-team honors were Barry's goalkeeper Becca Rogers and defender Ashley Harlan; Florida Southern's defender Alyssa Abrahamsen; and Florida Tech's forward Aubri Williamson.

Kabangu and the other members of the First Team will now advance to the national ballot which will be release in mid-December.
