Saint Leo Falls to Rollins, 3-1, in Senior Day Action

SAINT LEO, Fla. – In the last regular season game of the 2013 season, the Saint Leo women's soccer team fell to the visiting No. 25 Rollins College Tars by a 3-1 score. Despite the loss, the Lions finished the year in 4th place in the highly-competitive Sunshine State Conference and will compete in the SSC tournament, though dates and times are still to be determined.

Before the match, the Lions' coaching staff, comprised of head coach Ged O'Connor and assistant coaches Annie Hamel and Fredi Moore, recognized the seniors of the Saint Leo squad, a tradition among all Saint Leo teams at the end of the regular season. Seniors Katy McGee, Stephanie Marran, Katie Furtado, Line Pedersen, and captain Alicia Schuering were all honored for their contributions to the women's soccer program.

Once the clock started, a physical game ensued, as both teams hoped to capture high seeding in the forthcoming Sunshine State Conference tournament. It was Rollins who struck first in the match, when the Tars' freshman Mora Johnson connected on an assist from Emma Brown in the 30th minute to send the ball into the Lions' net.

After halftime expired, the Lions were able to tie the match at 1-1, thanks to an unassisted goal by the nation's leading scorer, freshman Arielle Kabangu.

With just 15 minutes remaining, the Tars took a 2-1 lead when Emma Jones capitalized on an assist from teammate Paxton Stickler.

Heading quickly into the end of regulation with a 2-1 lead, the Tars' Brenna McKee collected an unassisted goal in the 87th minute to tack on another Rollins goal and put the score at 3-1.

With the loss, the Lions end their regular season with a 10-6 record, and finish in 4th place in the Sunshine State Conference.

Saint Leo is set to face Florida Tech in the first round of the SSC tournament. Dates and times are still to be determined.
