SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's soccer team defeated the visiting Florida Tech Panthers in a Sunshine State Conference matchup by a 5-3 score, Saturday night from University Soccer Field. The win, which improved the Lions' record to 9-5 on the season, signaled their fourth SSC win this year.
Twenty minutes later, Jordan passed to Kristen Nerman from inside the box and Nerman was able to beat the Panthers' goalkeeper to go ahead 2-0, and shortly after, Maria Siegrist-Gabas sent a ball into the back of the net thanks to a double assist from Jordan and Genevieve Gignac for a 3-0 lead.
Just before halftime, Florida Tech's Carly Hunt capitalized off of a corner kick from teammate Julia Atenza to give the Panthers their first goal of the match.
After halftime, both the Lions and the Panthers tacked on two more goals, but Saint Leo would not be beaten. Freshman Arielle Kabangu, the nation's leading scorer in Division II, helped herself to both second half goals, giving her 18 goals on the season for the Lions.
As a team, Saint Leo recorded 18 shots on the evening. The Lions' goalkeeper, Abby Evans, recorded three saves.
The women's soccer team will return to action on Tuesday, October 29 when they travel to Eckerd College for yet another Sunshine State Conference matchup. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
