Women’s Soccer Tripped up by Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's soccer team was tripped up on the road as they fell to Tampa 5-2 in Sunshine State Conference action on Wednesday evening.
The Spartans improve to 14-1-1, 4-1-1 in the SSC, with the Lions dropping to 8-5, 3-2 in conference.
Forward Cici Gonzalez led the Spartans with a hat trick during the contest, scoring a single goal early on as Tampa suddenly held a 2-0 lead just 15 minutes into the contest.
Midfielder Paige Smith finalized the Spartans' first half scoring at 3-0, with Tampa outshooting the Lions 8-5 in the first 45 minutes.
Tampa's momentum continued early on in the second half with back-to-back goals by Gonzalez, completing her trifecta.
The Lions would not roll over easily. Forward Fabienne Schwenk found the back of the net twice within 10 minutes of each other, closing the gap to 5-2 with less than 10 minutes to play.
The three-goal gap was too much for the Lions to overcome as the host Spartans were able to claim the conference victory.
Tampa goalkeeper Alyson Gregorowicz collected five saves throughout the evening with the Lions' Abby Evans totaling one.
The Lions return home and will face Florida Tech on Saturday evening. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at University Field.
