Kabangu and Evans Shine as Lions Win Fourth-Straight

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Arielle Kabangu and Abby Evans continued to impress as one scored twice and the other stopped the opposing team from scoring as the Saint Leo women's soccer team claimed a valuable 2-0 road victory over Nova Southeastern in Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Kabangu was once again the story of the match between these teams, scoring both goals for the Lions (7-3, 2-0 SSC). She now has a NCAA leading 15 goals on the year.

The Sharks (4-6-1, 0-2-1 SSC) had the first great opportunity of the match, 15 minutes into the first half. Malin Broberg made an aggressive move to get the ball around the goalkeeper Evans towards the end line. Broberg then had to play the ball back into the middle, finding an open Rebecca Barb, who took the one time shot towards goal. However, Evans was able to retreat back to her net to make one of her seven saves in the match.

Kabangu continued to add to her impressive freshman campaign, scoring her 14th goal of the season, in the 33rd minute. Kabangu received a through ball that she was able to just sneak past junior goalkeeper Sandrra Rolon. Rolon finished the match with seven saves.

Sarah Keville nearly tied up the match late in the first half, when she took a half-contested shot from the top of the box. The shot was batted down and controlled by Evans, who cut down the angle well on Keville's shot.

The match went into halftime with a 1-0 Saint Leo advantage.

The 54th minute saw more of Kabangu, as she scored her second one-on-one chance of the match, giving the Lions a 2-0 cushion.

The final 36 minutes saw a lot of back and forth action, with neither goalkeeper really being challenged.

This match, like the first meeting, was very aggressive. The teams accumulated for 30 total fouls and five yellow cards.

The Lions had the slight edge in shots, 14-12. Broberg led the Sharks in shots, six, while Kabangu led her side with five.

Saint Leo will look to continue its hot streak as the Lions will take their four-game win streak back to south Florida when they face Barry on Wednesday.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Miami Shores, Fla.
