MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's soccer team (2-9-1) fell to the Barry University Buccaneers (4-6) by the final score of 2-0, Wednesday evening from Buccaneer Field in non-conference action.
Battling the Bucs for the second time in less than a month, the Lions could not uphold Jessica Griffith's five-save night as Barry's Emma Karp registered a 51st-minute goal to send the Bucs' to the eventual 2-0 victory.
Griffith backed the Lions' defense in the first half as she compiled each of her saves in the opening stanza, keeping Barry off the board. Meanwhile, the Lions' offense was filtered through junior Ashley Acco as she registered two of the team's three shots in the first half, including the club's lone shot on target.
However, the Buccaneers broke the scoreless affair early in the second half as Emma Karp, who had a hand in both the Buccaneers' goals, slotted one past Griffith to give the home standing Bucs' the lead.
Barry added to the advantage in the 66th-minute when Lavinia Nkomo found the net off a feed from Karp.
The Saint Leo attack did begin to find its groove, however, as they posted nine shots in the second half, five of which came off the foot of sophomore Ari Foreman. Three of those nine attempts were on target, but Barry goalkeeper Becca Rodgers was up to the challenge as she made all three saves to preserve the win.
Barry outshot the Lions, 16-12, while the two teams combined for nine corner kick attempts. The Lions' Abby Evans also posted three saves in the setback.
The Lions will now prepare for a trip to Winter Park, Fla. as they challenge Rollins College in a Sunshine State Conference showdown. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
