SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's soccer team (2-6-1, 1-3-1 SSC) fell to the Eckerd College Tritons (3-2-2, 1-1-1 SSC)) by a score of 2-1, Wednesday evening from Saint Leo University field.
Despite being tied at the half, the Lions were unable to recover from a late second half goal by the Tritons.
The Lions took an early lead in the contest when Saint Leo forward Shanelle Edwards broke away from an Eckerd defender and sent a laser past the hands of the Tritons' goalkeeper, Morgan Crescent, in the seventh minute.
Despite Saint Leo's early lead, the Tritons answered back on offense. In the 18th minute, a set piece came back to haunt the Lions when an Eckerd free kick resulted in a goal as Dana Treat headed in a pass from Arie Anahory.
The defining goal of the game came in the second half when Eckerd's Arie Anahory took control of the ball at the top of the box and edged it past Abby Evans to go ahead, 2-1. Despite a late push from the Green and Gold, the Tritons held off the attack as they notched their first conference win of the season, as well as taking their first win against the Lions since 2002.
In total, Evans notched three saves, while both teams combined for 32 shots, including 15 by Saint Leo.
The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, October 3, when they travel to Lakeland, Fla. to take on the Florida Southern Moccasins. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
