Women's Soccer Drops Conference Contest to Tampa
SAINT LEO, Fla. – Just four days after a one-point loss to conference rival Barry, the Saint Leo University women's soccer team (2-5) lost to the University of Tampa Spartans (6-2) by a score of 1-0. The Wednesday night contest featured the Lions' third conference game of the season.
The Spartans dominated the ball in both halves of the contest, allowing the Lions only four shots during the 90-minute game. After a scoreless 89 minutes, however, it was the Spartans who took control with a 9th-minute tally.
With 33.4 seconds left to go in the second half, Tampa's Amber Pennybaker crossed the ball to the middle of the field into a mass of green and red, which resulted in a deflection. Cici Gonzalez was able to regain control of the ball and hammer the ball into the back of the net, edging the fingers of Saint Leo goalkeeper, Abby Evans.
Despite the loss, the Lions' goalkeeper Abby Evans (2-4) notched three saves while Saint Leo committed only one foul.
The Lions will compete again on Saturday, September 22, when they take on the next opponent of their eight-game conference run, the Florida Tech Panthers. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. from Rick Stottler Field.
