BOCA RATON, Fla. – Opening Sunshine State Conference action, the Saint Leo women's soccer team (2-3-0, 1-0-0 SSC ) defeated Lynn University (0-3-1, 0-1-0 SSC), 2-1, in double overtime Wednesday afternoon from the McCusker Sports Complex in Boca Raton, Fla.
Stephanie Marran and Ari Foreman proved to be the Lions' goal scorers as they connected with tallies in the fifth and 101st minute. In between goal, Lions' keeper Abby Evan posted a season-high 13 saves as they Lions etched their first conference win.
In a first half that featured 19 combined shots, including 12 on-goal, it was the Lions who broke through with the initial tally as Marran notched her first goal of the season.
Striking in the fifth minute, Marran made a strong run down the middle of the field and received a precision loft from Adrianna Johnson from left edge. Marran settled the one bouncer with the top of her head and slotted it into the left corner from five yards out.
Both teams registered near-miss chances over the course of the next 40 minutes, but both goalkeepers proved to be up for the challenge. Lions' goalie Abby Evans produced six of the 12 combined saves, while keeping the Fighting Knights off the board heading into the half.
Continuing her outstanding effort in net, Evans set the tone for the remainder of the game as her point blank save in the 49th minute kept the Lions in front.
Sparked by Evans, stout defending by the Lions protected the Saint Leo lead until the 73rd minute when Lynn's Tatiana Penagos took a deflected pass and launched a 30-yard shot to towards mouth of goal. Unfortunately for Evans, the ball was too far out of the reach of her mitts and found the upper left corner of the net, equalizing the contest at one.
With Saint Leo's late game chances being scooped up by Meghan Dolan, the game was sent to overtime, the first OT session between the two since 2008.
With the first overtime not producing any offensive, it was an opportunistic Foreman who pushed the Lions to victory as she, with a defender at her hip, rocketed a shot from the left edge of the 18-yard box into the upper right portion of the net, snapping the Lions three-match losing streak
Saint Leo is now 11-6 all-time against Lynn.
