Lions Impress In Season-Opening Win Over Warner
SAINT LEO, Fla. – In their first match of the year, the Saint Leo University Women's Soccer team (1-0) defeated the Warner Royals (0-1) in a 3-0 shutout on Thursday night at University Soccer Field.
The first goal of the game came after two minutes when senior Lise Nisja scored on a penalty kick after junior Ashley Acco was brought down inside the box.The contest, which officially lasted two hours and 50 minutes because of a lighting delay, started the same way that it ended: with the Lions controlling the ball.
Eleven minutes after the first goal, Ari Foreman was able to break away from Royal defenders at the 18-yard line and sent a unassisted goal through the keeper's legs.
Within five minutes of returning to action of an hour-long lightning delay, Jemma White assisted a ball to Shannelle Williams at the left side of the 18-yard line, who was able to place the ball into the back of the net, just outside the reach of the Warner goalkeeper.
In the second half, the Lions continued to control the game, on both offense and defense. Multiple breakaways from Ari Foreman and corner kicks from Samantha Buterbaugh did not result in any more goals for the women, though it allowed them to keep possession of the ball for nearly the entire half, outshooting the Royals 17-1.
The Lions next contest will take place on Monday, September 3rd in the women's first away match of the season. Kickoff will occur promptly at 1 p.m. in the contest versus the Webber International University Warriors.
