Lions Earn Key Conference Victory over Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – First half productivity sealed the deal for the Lions as they defeated Barry University 2-1 at Buccaneer Field on Saturday evening in Miami Shores, Fla.  The seventh-ranked Saint Leo Lions picked up a key Sunshine State Conference victory, and remain unbeaten in conference action, advancing to 14-1-1, and 6-0-1 in conference play, while the Bucs drop to 6-9-0, and 2-5-0 in the SSC.

The Green and Gold put themselves on the board early with a goal in the fourth minute from Ari Foreman off of an assist from Dari Alcantara.

Barry knotted the score at 1-1 early in the 26th minute, thanks to a Melissa Madrid goal off an assist from Amber Bender.  But the Lions found an opportunity three minutes later, and Foreman ripped the game-winning tally between the posts to nab her second goal of the contest.

The Buccaneers led the shot count, 16-13, but the Lions had more shots on target, 6-4.  Laura Carstens set aside three shots, while Barry's goalkeeper, Melissa Toledo, collected four.  Both teams had four opportunities from the corner.

The win put the Lions one step closer to capturing their first Sunshine State Conference regular season title.

The Lions return to action on Thursday, October 27, when they make the short trek south to take on the University of Tampa in their final game of the regular season.  Kickoff against the Spartans is set for 7 p.m.  For the latest news, updates, and information on the seventh-ranked Saint Leo University women's soccer team, visit SaintLeoLions.com.
