SAINT LEO, Fla. – Opening their conference campaign on a high note, the 20th ranked Saint Leo University women's soccer team upended top-ranked Florida Tech with a 1-0 decision on Wednesday evening at University Field. The Lions stay perfect on the season and climb to 7-0, and 1-0 in Sunshine State Conference action, while the No. 1 Panthers swallow their first defeat of the season and drop to 5-1, and 0-1 in conference play.
Earning the game-winning tally on the evening was Dari Alcantara, off of a Cassie Barbaresi corner kick in the 56th minute. Barbaresi sent the kick square into the center of the box, placing the ball on target with Alcantara who sent a header directly between the posts.
The Lions earned their key conference victory thanks to five clutch saves from goalkeeper Laura Carstens. Two additional team saves, and stalwart defensive play from the Green and Gold helped keep the Panthers off the scoreboard as the Lions clinched their second shutout of the season.
Florida Tech led the shot count 15-7 and placed seven shots on frame to Saint Leo's one, but the Lions made their lone shot on frame count in a big way and sealed the deal.
The Saint Leo women's soccer team returns to action on Sunday, September 25, when they take on Alabama-Huntsville in non-conference action. Kickoff against the Chargers is slated for noon at University Field. For the latest news, updates, and information on the nationally-ranked Lions, visit SaintLeoLions.com
