SAINT LEO, Fla. - Inclement weather forced the conclusion of the contest in the 72nd minute of play, but not before the Saint Leo women's soccer team scored eight unanswered goals upon Maverick College, Friday afternoon at University Field. Dari Alcantara notched a new career high, and the first hat trick of her collegiate career, as she put away three goals and added an assist in the Lions' first shutout of their young season.
Saint Leo earns their third straight victory thanks to seven different Lions putting points on the scoreboard. Alcantara led the way, with Pia Soesemann closing out the afternoon with two goals and an assist for five points. Stephanie Marran placed two goals between the pipes, while Jasmine Johnson notched a goal and assist of her own. Rounding out the points were Francesca Williams, Cassie Barbaresi and Sam Butterbaugh with one assist apiece.
Mercy saw a total of three shots, and one shot on goal, which was saved by SLU goalkeeper Jessica Griffith in the second half. Opening the game between the posts was Laura Carstens, who did not see any shots on frame in her entire 45 minutes of action. Maverick keeper Krystal Guerrero set aside four shots while yielding eight, helping the Green and Gold to their best performance yet in 2011.
The Lions bit early and could not be tamed, thanks to an Alcantara goal in the fifth minute off of an assist from Williams. Saint Leo closed out the first period with a 3-0 advantage, and opened the second stanza on fire with Soesemann finding the back of the net a minute and a half in on an assist from Johnson.
Saint Leo led the shot count 19-3, held the advantage in corner kicks 3-2, and played a clean game committing eight fouls to Mercy's 14.
The Lions return to action on Sunday, September 11, when they host Webber International at University Field. Kickoff against the Warriors is set for 1:00 p.m. For the latest news, updates, and information on the Saint Leo University women's soccer team, visit SaintLeoLions.com
