Hannah Beard, Stacey Rodwell and Francesca Williams Contribute to Title Bid
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Reproducing a small bit of the magic from the memorable 2008 SSC Tournament championship-winning season, three current and former Saint Leo women's soccer players have once again linked up across the country and pushed their current team to a title as well. All-America Hannah Beard, Stacey Rodwell and current player Francesca Williams helped push the Santa Clarita Blue Heat to a W-League Western Conference Championship in only the team's second year of existence.
Beard, the Lions' first-ever Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year (2008), is currently third on the team in scoring heading into the playoffs. She graduated from Saint Leo as one of the most decorated players in Saint Leo Women's Soccer history and ranks second all-time in scoring at Saint Leo.
Rodwell also has her name in the offensive categories as she is just one of three players in double-figures in points on the team. Leading the team in assists (6); she has amassed 10 points and has two goals. She was a member of the Lions from 2007-2009 before heading to the West Coast to play for Cal State-LA where she finished her career.
The only current Lion on the team, Francesca Williams, enters her senior season in prime form as she has posted nearly 350 minutes helping to anchor the Blue Heat's defense. Selected to the NSCAA All-Region team twice during her career, she is also a Sunshine State Conference Second-Team member (2009) and helped post seven shutouts during 2010.
By finishing first in the W-League's Western Conference, the Blue Heat will host the Western Conference Championship match against second place finisher Vancouver in Santa Clarita next Sunday at a date, time and venue to be determined.
