Three Lions Tabbed All-Region to Cap 9-7-1 Season

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's soccer team was able to put their academic prowess on display as three Lions were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association Scholar All-Region team it was announced over the Christmas holiday.  Pia Soesemann, behind her nationally recognized 19-goal season, earned first-team honors while her teammates Courtney Kassab and Francesca Williams earned an honorable mention nod.

Scoring 19 goals in 2010, the native of Berlin, Germany single-handedly revived a stagnant Saint Leo offense at midseason.  In the second half of the year, she exploded for 11 goals, scoring in five consecutive games.  Sparking her team, the forward helped take the Lions from a 4-6-1 record to finish the season at 9-7-1 and another Sunshine State Conference tournament berth.  She finished 2010 with the Sunshine State Conference's Player of the Year Award and a first-team selection to the NSCAA's All-Region team.

Academically, the junior is also a heavyweight in the classroom as she carries a 3.88 grade-point average in the dual fields of History and International Studies.  A stellar student, Soesemann has appeared in the Saint Leo President's Club four-times, the Division II Athletic Directors Academic Achievement Award List, the Saint Leo Dean's List and a member of the Sunshine State Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Williams qualified after posting her 3.41 grade point average in her selected field of History alongside appearances in the President's Club, Dean's List and the SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll.  Appearing in 16 games, the defender from Formby, England logged nearly 1,300 minutes while anchoring a back-line that only surrendered 22 goals.  She helped the Lions' defense to a four-game scoreless streak all while managing a goal and an assist.

In limited time this season, Kassab started 10 games at midfield and played almost 800 minutes.  Scoring a goal and posting two helpers, the senior from Pinckney, Mich. finished a respectable Saint Leo career in 2010.  Majoring in International Business, Kassab earned honorable mention honors behind her 3.45 grade point average.
