SAINT LEO, Fla. – After being named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Scholar All-America First team member last week, Beard was selected as one of the top student athletes in country, being named to the NSCAA Scholar All-Region Second Team, it was announced Saturday.

Beard is no stranger to the well deserved award as she was labeled a first team all-america selection in 2008. Beard finished her ’09 campaign with 3.68 grade-point-average while taking steps forward for her degree in Criminology. Beard’s individual accomplishment also added to the team’s success as the Lions earned their second consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Award earlier in the month.

The award marks the fifth postseason award for the Liverpool, England native, two of which have been of the academic kind.

Beard had the fourth highest GPA on the second team squad, and the highest of any Sunshine State Conference members to make first, second, or third teams.

To go along with her outstanding effort in the classroom, Beard finished the year as the leading scorer for the Lions with 28 points, including 12 goals and four assists. The senior finished her career with 46 career goals, the all-time assist leader with 31, having played in 73 games, and a program-best 123 points.

The forward was joined by the Rollins pair of Meaghan Thomas and Rachel Jakubowski on the second team.

To be nominated for consideration, student-athletes must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout their career; start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team; be nominated by an institution that is a current NSCAA College Services member; be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution and either be in their second year at the current school if a transfer student.

Beard will join other NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America selections who will recognized at the annual All-America Luncheon, held in Philadelphia, Pa., on Jan. 16 as part of the 2010 NSCAA Convention.
