SAINT LEO, Fla. – Head Coach Ged O’Connor will begin his quest toward another SSC Tournament Title as the Saint Leo women’s soccer team kicks off the 2009 season on August 31st on the road against Webber International University.
The opening road contest is one of nine away games the Lions will play this season as the schedule only has SLU in the friendly confines of University Fields seven times in the regular season.
After opening the season in Babson Park against the Warriors, the Lions men’s and women’s teams will travel to Pensacola where they will face West Florida, who handed both teams their first losses in 2008, and a neutral site contest at UWF’s field against Delta State.
The first home event for the women is Thursday, September 10th as the Lions square off against Armstrong Atlantic State in a game under the lights. They follow that with another night home game a week later against Robert Morris College.
After the Robert Morris contest, the Lions open conference play at Eckerd College which begins a stretch where six of their next eight opponents are within the Sunshine State Conference. In that span of games, running from September 23rd through October 17th, the Lions will host Rollins, Florida Tech, Lynn and Florida Southern, while visiting south Florida twice to play road games against Palm Beach Atlantic and Barry.
The Florida Southern home game on October 17th will be the final regular season contest of the season and, as a result, will also be Senior Day for the women’s soccer team.
The regular season closes with three road games in eight days with the final two, contests with Nova Southeastern and Tampa, shaping up to be critical SSC matches at the end of October. The Tampa game, the final contest of the season, will be on Wednesday night, October 28th at Tampa’s Pepin Stadium.
The Sunshine State Conference Tournament will get underway November 3rd with the tournament championship being awarded on November 8th.
At the conclusion of the SSC Tournament, the Lions will hope to be looking for another NCAA postseason bid to the South Region Championships which will take place November 12th – 15th.
The NCAA Division II National Championships will be contested December 4th – 6th in Tampa.
