SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (14-3, 5-2 SSC) upended the Nova Southeastern University Sharks (8-5-3, 1-5-2 SSC), 7-1 Wednesday evening at a frigid University Field.

The Lions were led on the evening by Hannah Beard, as she totaled six points, including two goals and two assists. Courtney Kassab added her seventh goal of the year in the 58th minute and freshman Pia Soesemann lit-up the back of the net with her 11th goal of the campaign.

After a scoreless first 38 minutes, Darwell connected on a rebound attempt from a Beard blast inside the box to give the Lions the advantage. Beard settled the ball down to her foot at the right near corner flag and sent a quality pass to the far post where Darwell charged into the box. The ball struck the head of a the leaping forward and she smashed the pass into the back of the net.

The forward brought down a pass from Soesemann near the left far wing and with a defender on her hip, she enter the six-yard box. From there, Beard ripped a shot passed the Sharks ‘keeper solidifying the Lions lead.   The barrage continued as Darwell found Soesemann to make the score 4-0. Kassab then struck a header into the back of the net off a corner kick from Malloree Enoch.

Beard was not finished, as she tallied her team-leading 16th goal of the season in impressive fashion. After receiving a through ball from Stacey Rodwell near the top of the box, Beard drove hard around the right edge, soaring past one defender and then around the ‘keeper, slotting the ball into the back of the net.

After having her first attempt near the left far post saved, Metallo’s persistence paid off as the save attempt came right back to her and this time she made it counting, crushing the ball into the back of the net, closing out the Lions scoring on the day.

Although she left the game at the beginning of the second half, Lauren Hudson still picked up her 13th victory of the season, while Kelcee Mai did an admirable job in net, only conceding one goal in her 45 minutes of play.
