ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (13-3) defeated the Flagler College Saints (5-11-1), 3-0 in non-conference action, from Saints Field Saturday evening.

Saint Leo came out with all cylinders firing, peppering the Saints’ ‘keeper with 16 shots in the first half. Sophomore Chrissy Darwell kicked things off for the Lions, scoring the first of the teams two goals of the period in the 20th minute. Hannah Beard connected on one of her two assists of the day, dishing the ball to Malloree Enoch who notched her third goal of the season in the first half. Pia Soesemann was the other recipient of a Beard delivery, connecting in the 58th minute for her tenth goal of the season. Beard now has 38 points for the season.

The Lions blitz the Saints right out of the gate, mounting pressure on both their defenders and their ‘keeper for most of the night. The Lions’ scoring began when Kiki Day sent a ball form the right near sideline up to Darwell, who was sprinting down the left sideline. Darwell recived the ball and with one move on a Saints’ defender, crossed into the box and drove the ball into the far right corner of the net, giving the Lions the 1-0 lead. SLU added to their lead, when Beard played a ball forward to Enoch deep in Saints territory. Enoch received the pass in the box and scooted the ball past the diving left arm of Kaitlyn Goffe. The Lions entered the interval with a 2-0 advantage.

Each side came out aggressive in the second half.  But while Flagler continued to shoot high and wide of the Lions’ ‘keeper Hudson, Saint Leo made sure to capitalize on their opportunities. Soesemann scored the lone goal of the shot-filled half, as Beard drove in hard off the right wing, laying the ball up for Soesemann near the top of the 18-yard box. With a defender on her right hip, she dribbled down the left wing and powered a left foot shot past the ‘keeper for the final tally of the night.

Although the Lions let up 16 total shots, their defense came up big at crucial moments, never letting Flagler threaten Hudson in the net.

Hudson recorded her tenth shutout of the season, while improving to 12-3 overall.

Saint Leo outshot the Saints 24-16 on the day, while registering 11 shots-on-goal.

Saint Leo returns to SSC play, Wednesday, October 29 at 5:00 pm for a showdown with Nova Southeastern University at University Field.
