ORLANDO, Fla. - The Saint Leo University women’s soccer team put together a solid all-around performance as they defeated Robert Morris College 2-1 at the Dan Maus Seminole Soccer Complex on Thursday night.
As the Lions pushed their winning streak to four games they started off by surrendering the matches first goal to the visiting Eagles (3-4) in the 8th minute as Robert Morris caught the Lions on a counter-attack as Patricia Nogueira’s thru-ball split the defense and caught Gifty Appiah in stride where she slotted the ball past a diving Lauren Hudson to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Junior Sara Macko wasted no time finding the equalizer as she single-handedly dribbled past the entire Eagle defense and rocketed the ball into the upper-90 to notch her second goal of the season. Macko’s blast came just 41 seconds after the Robert Morris tally.
The game stayed knotted at one until the 50th minute when junior Hannah Beard took control of the ball at the halfway line and dribbled, at-speed down the left flank, thru the Robert Morris defense and slotted it past the goalkeeper into the bottom left-hand corner for the Lions’ advantage.
The Lions then spent the remaining 40 minutes playing strong defense and keeping Robert Morris off the scoreboard while Saint Leo missed some opportunities to increase their advantage. A penalty-kick that was deflected and a wide-open miss kept the Eagles in the game for the remainder.
Hudson, surrendering the lone goal, made six saves as the Saint Leo defense faced 11 shots. The Lions took 21 shots toward the target, 12 going on-goal and had four corners.
The Lions now turn their attention toward the beginning of the Sunshine State Conference schedule as they host arch-rival Tampa on Tuesday night. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at University Field.
