Saint Leo, Fla. (August 28, 2008) – The Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (1-0) scored early and often as they opened up their 2008 season with a record-setting 12-0 victory over visiting Clearwater Christian College (0-1) on Thursday afternoon at University Field.
The 12 goals scored in the season-opener top the mark for most goals scored in a game that the Lions set when they downed Georgia Southwestern University 11-0 almost 11 months ago.
Lions forward Hannah Beard (Liverpool, England) scored four times, notching the games first tally in the 10th minute and second half goals one minute and 43 seconds apart, which capped her day after 50 minutes of action.
Saint Leo newcomer Pia Soesemann (Berlin, Germany) opened her college career in style as she scored two goals and assisted on Beard’s final goal of the day.
In a contest which saw possession stay in the Lions’ favor for nearly the entire match, Saint Leo racked up 49 shots with 30 being on-goal. Cougar keepers Chelsea Thomas and Megan Dixon combined for 18 saves while last season’s All-Region goalie Lauren Hudson (Odessa, Fla.) did not see a shot come her way.
In addition to the shot tally, the Lions dominated CCC in corner kicks with a 12-0 advantage.
The Saint Leo women’s soccer team will next play a week from Friday as they travel to Pensacola, Fla. to face the University of West Florida. The Lions upended the Argonauts 2-1 last season for Saint Leo’s first-ever win over UWF. SLU will look to repeat the feat on September 5th with an 8:30 p.m. EST kick-off.
