Saint Leo, Fla. (November 9, 2007) – No. 6 seed University of Montevallo got a pair of second half goals to upset the third-seeded University of West Florida Argonauts by a score of 2-0 on Friday night in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championships at Saint Leo University.

A 53rd minute strike by Paula Radmard was followed by an 86th minute unassisted goal by Kami Kapaku to give the lower seeded side the victory.

Montevallo will now face No. 2 seed Saint Leo University at University Field on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.  The Lions defeated the Falcons 2-0 earlier this season at University Field.  Evelina Viiri (Jr., Heby, Sweden) and Dari Alcantara (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) scored second half goals to propel the Lions to the win back on September 7.

A scoreless first half saw scoring chances for both sides.  Montevallo nearly broke the deadlock in the 13th minute; however, Catherine Honey’s effort hit the crossbar.  UWF’s best opportunity came in the 29th minute when a long range effort from Dernelle Mascall was pushed wide of the post by Falcon goalkeeper Cory Gros.

In the 52nd minute, West Florida hit the crossbar with a rasping drive from Naila Owens, and just one minute later the eventual game-winning goal was scored by Radmard as she got on the end of a through ball and scored the go-ahead goal.

Kapaku then iced the victory in the 86th minute with an individual effort that saw her go past several defenders before eventually slotting beyond the goalkeeper to send the Falcons into the second round.
