Miami Shores, Fla. (October 27, 2007) – The Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (14-3, 6-2 SSC) fell 3-0 at Barry University (8-9, 2-6 SSC) in the final regular season match of 2007 on Saturday in Miami Shores, Fla.
The Bucs opened the scoring in the 19th minute when a through ball from Elanna Brady ran into the path of striker Damarys Mendez. The striker slotted it beyond SLU ‘keeper Lauren Hudson (Jr., Odessa, Fla.) for the breakthrough goal.
Saint Leo nearly equalized in the 33rd minute when striker Chrissy Darwell (Fr., Cranston, R.I.) struck a shot that hit the left upright. The Bucs took their 1-0 lead into the half-time locker room.
Barry doubles its advantage in the 47th minute when a free kick from Michelle Tarasiuk was flicked on by Maya Ozery and went beyond an onrushing Hudson for a 2-0 Barry lead.
The Lions began their fight back with an offensive assault. However, Barry goalkeeper Kelly Tryson was unbeatable and even when the Lions did beat the Bucs’ goalkeeper, there was a defender on the line to clear the danger.
Barry iced the win in the 86th minute when Ozery scored her second goal of the match.
Saint Leo will now be either the number two or number three seed in the SSC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday. The official tournament announcement and pairings will be made on Sunday but the Lions will earn the No. 2 seed if Nova Southeastern fails to defeat Florida Southern Saturday night. Should the Sharks defeat the Moccasins, Saint Leo would be the No. 3 seed and would host Lynn University Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
