Saint Leo, Fla. (October 20, 2007) – The No. 19 Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (14-2) defeated St. Thomas University (8-5-1) by a score of 6-1 for its 11th straight victory on Saturday night at University Field. The Lions also matched their program record for victories in a single season with their 14th of the 2007 campaign.
Six different Lion players scored in the match, while Hannah Beard (Fr., Liverpool, England) and Bridgett Godwin (Jr., Ocean Springs, Miss.) each tallied a pair of assists.
After early chances fell to the visiting Bobcats, the Lions found the breakthrough goal in the 29th minute. A long free kick by goalkeeper Lauren Hudson (Jr., Odessa, Fla.) was flicked on in the penalty area by Godwin. Stacey Rodwell (Fr., Southport, England) latched onto the pass and fired into an empty net for her fourth goal of the season.
The Lions doubled their lead just 1:08 later when Sara Macko (So., Valrico, Fla.) took a pass from Beard and fired home for her sixth goal of the year. Less than four minutes later, the lead was 3-0 when Dari Alcantara (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
After STU pulled a goal back with a penalty from Sandra Vargas, the Lions restored their three-goal lead with 37-seconds remaining in the opening half. A corner kick from Rodwell was met in the air by Kiki Day (Fr., Denver, Colo.) and directed beyond Bobcats’ goalkeeper Lea Jones to give Saint Leo a 4-1 lead at half-time.
Jessica Lebohner (So., Seminole, Fla.) and Lui Metallo (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) each scored their second goal of the season in the second half to cap off the win.
Saint Leo’s final regular season match will be at SSC rival Barry University on Saturday, October 27 in Miami Shores, Fla. at 4:30 p.m. A win versus Barry would guarantee the Lions at least a share of the 2007 Sunshine State Conference Championship and the top seed in the SSC Tournament.
