Saint Leo, Fla. (October 6, 2007) – The Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (11-2, 4-1 SSC) stretched its winning streak to eight matches with a 2-0 shutout win over visiting Florida Tech (5-4-1, 0-3-1 SSC) on Saturday night at University Field.
The Lions got goals from Bridgett Godwin (Jr., Ocean Springs, Miss.) and Dari Alcantara (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) either side of the half-time to secure the eighth win in a row. Saint Leo goalkeeper Lauren Hudson (Jr., Odessa, Fla.) made six saves in the match to keep her fourth shutout of the season.
Godwin opened the scoring in the 20th minute after a strong build up from the left. Sara Macko’s (So., Valrico, Fla.) deflected pass fell into the path of Hannah Beard (So., Liverpool, England). The striker than played the ball across the face of goal where Godwin smashed it home for a 1-0 Saint Leo lead.
The Lions doubled the lead early in the second half when Alcantara received a flicked on header from striker Chrissy Darwell (Fr., Cranston, R.I.). Alcantara gathered the ball and then unleashed a fierce drive beyond Tech ‘keeper Melissa Pyles for her fifth goal of the season in the 50th minute.
The Lions will have a week off before their next match at home versus Lynn University in another Sunshine State Conference affair. Kick off for the October 13 match is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at University Field.
