Saint Leo, Fla. (October 2, 2007) – The No. 20 Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (10-2) came back from a 1-0 half-time deficit to defeat visiting Flagler College (5-5) by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday night at University Field. The Lions stretched their winning streak to seven matches with the victory.
Saint Leo got second half goals from Bridgett Godwin (Jr., Ocean Springs, Miss.) and Evelina Viiri (Jr., Heby, Sweden) to overturn the deficit. SLU sophomore striker Hannah Beard (Liverpool, England) assisted on both goals in a match that was delayed for over 30 minutes due to severe weather with 4:19 left in regulation.
Flagler opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Caitlin Eggiman came down the right side of the field before playing a ball across the face of goal. Saints’ leading scorer Annika Hogberg fired home the cross to give the visitors a 1-0 lead with her 12th goal of the campaign.
The Lions equalized in the 49th minute when a deflected shot by Beard fell to Godwin. The midfielder fired beyond the reach of Flagler goalkeeper Hope McArthur to bring the sides level at 1-1.
Saint Leo then took the lead in the 54th minute when Beard played a perfect through ball for Viiri. The midfielder calmly found the back of the net for her team-leading sixth goal of the season, stretching her goal scoring streak to three matches.
As regulation was winding down, lightning forced a delay to the match with 4:19 remaining. After the two sides returned to the field, the Lions defended well and preserved the win.
Saint Leo returns to Sunshine State Conference play this weekend, as it will host Florida Tech on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
