Americus, Ga. (September 30, 2007) – The Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (9-2) stretched its winning streak to six matches with a convincing 11-0 road victory over Georgia Southwestern State University (0-11) on Sunday in Americus, Ga.
The Lions were led by Hannah Beard (Liverpool, England) who scored two goals and added two assists for a six-point day. Jennifer O’Connor (Sr., Fernandina Beach, Fla.) and Stacey Rodwell (Fr., Southport, England) also scored two goals in the match, while Sara Macko (So., Valrico, Fla.) had a goal and four assists.
Saint Leo took the lead early, as Dari Alcantara (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) scored her fourth goal of the season, and third in as many matches, in the ninth minute. The lead was doubled late in the first half when Ana Davila (So., Valrico, Fla.) scored her first career goal off a Macko corner kick in the 43rd minute.
The floodgates opened in the second half, as Saint Leo erupted for nine goals in the final 36 minutes of the game. Overall, the Lions outshot the Hurricanes 26-3 and had a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal. SLU ‘keeper Lauren Hudson (Jr., Odessa, Fla.) made three saves to preserve her third shutout of the season.
The Lions return to action on Tuesday night when they host Flagler College at University Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
