Saint Leo, Fla. (September 7, 2007) – The 13th ranked Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (3-1) won its third straight match with a 2-0 victory over visiting Montevallo (1-4) on Friday evening at University Field.
Evelina Viiri (Jr., Heby, Sweden) scored what proved to be the eventual game-winner and Dari Alcantara (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) added her first career goal to ice the game late. The Lions earned their first shutout of the season in the win, as they limited the Falcons to just one shot on target in the 90 minutes.
After a scoreless first half, which saw very few opportunities for both teams, the Lions found the breakthrough goal in the 50th minute. A free kick from 23 yards found its way beyond the Montevallo wall and out of the reach of Corey Gros for Viiri’s second goal of 2007.
The Lions were given a numerical advantage in the 69th minute when Montevallo defender Adele Jackson was sent off for a second yellow card in the space of a minute.
Saint Leo made good use of the advantage in the 76th minute when Sara Macko (So., Valrico, Fla.) worked her way into the penalty area and pulled a pass across the face of goal for Alcantara to tap home for her first career goal.
SLU will open its Sunshine State Conference schedule on Wednesday, September 12 with a visit to Nova Southeastern University. Kick off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the NSU Soccer Complex.
