Saint Leo, Fla. (September 2, 2007) – Sara Macko’s (So., Valrico, Fla.) goal in the 73rd minute gave the No. 22 Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (2-1) a 2-1 in over the visiting No. 15 University of West Florida Argonauts (1-2) on Sunday in the Lions’ 2007 home opener. The win marked the Lions first-ever victory over the Argonauts in the eighth all-time meeting between the two teams.
SLU freshman Chrissy Darwell (Cranston, R.I.) opened the scoring in the match in the first half, but UWF battled back to tie the score in the 57th minute.
Following a two hour delay due to severe weather in the Saint Leo area, the Lions got the breakthrough goal in the 17th minute when right back Kiki Day (Fr., Denver, Colo.) started a counter attack. She played the ball forward for Hannah Beard (So., Liverpool, England) who then slipped a through ball into the path of Darwell. The striker calmly fired beyond Argos’ goalkeeper Courtney Jones for a 1-0 Saint Leo lead.
After the half-time interval, UWF managed to tie the score at 1-1 in the 57th minute when a free kick resulted in a scramble inside the Saint Leo penalty area. Galucci found the loose ball and put it beyond goalkeeper Lauren Hudson (Jr., Odessa, Fla.) to level the score.
The Lions found the winner in the 73rd minute when Bridgett Godwin (Jr., Ocean Springs, Miss.) was able to run down a ball in the right corner and play it toward the penalty area. Macko brought it down with space, settled and slotted home for the eventual game-winner.
Saint Leo returns to action on Friday, September 7 when the Lions host another south region foe in the University of Montevallo. Kick off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
