Saint Leo, Fla. (August 15, 2007) – The Saint Leo women’s soccer team was ranked No. 19 in the pre-season NSCAA/adidas National Poll released on Tuesday. The Lions are one of only two teams from the Sunshine State Conference in the top-25, joining the University of Tampa who enter the season ranked No. 4.
The Lions are entering the 2007 season fresh off the most successful campaign in program history in 2006, and after finishing the year ranked 19th in the nation. Head coach Ged O’Connor guided Saint Leo to a 14-3-2 record a year ago, and earned the first-ever berth in the NCAA National Tournament. The Lions set a new program record with a 6-2 mark in the Sunshine State Conference, good for a runner-up finish in the regular season. They also finished as runner-up in the post-season SSC Tournament, reaching the Championship match for the first time in school history.
Other teams in the top-25 include the University of West Florida who knocked the Lions out of the NCAA Tournament with a 7-6 victory in penalty kicks, following a 1-1 tie in regulation and extra-time. The Argos are ranked 11th in the pre-season poll and will serve as the Lions’ guests in Saint Leo’s 2007 home opener on Sunday, September 2 (12:30 p.m. kick-off).
Saint Leo will open its 2007 season on the road next weekend in New Hampshire. The Lions will face Southern New Hampshire University on Thursday, August 23 at 4:00 p.m. and then take on Saint Anselm College on Sunday, August 26 at 11:00 a.m. Both matches can be heard live on the Internet by clicking the Stretch Internet logo on the front page of SaintLeoLions.com or by clicking the Live Broadcasts link.
