Lakeland, Fla. (September 6, 2006) – Jennifer O’Connor’s second goal of the match in the 104th minute gave the 24th ranked Saint Leo women’s soccer team a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Florida Southern College Wednesday night at Barnett Field in Lakeland, Fla.
The game was the conference opener for both sides, as SLU remained unbeaten on the season (3-0-1, 1-0 SSC) while FSC (2-3, 0-1 SSC) had its two-match winning streak snapped.
The Lions appeared to be heading for their fourth consecutive shutout to open the 2006 season when Florida Southern’s Halie Clark scored with just 12-seconds remaining in regulation to force the game into extra time. The goal ended Saint Leo’s shutout string at 380 minutes.
O’Connor had opened the scoring in the 65th minute and capped off her second two-goal game of the season with the game-winner in the 14th minute of the extra period. The junior midfielder took a pass from midfielder Bridget Godwin (So., Ocean Springs, Miss.) and finished beyond FSC goalkeeper Kim Fish from close range.
Opening kick-off was delayed for over an hour due to lightning in the Lakeland area.
The Lions will return to action on Friday, as they will face the University of Montevallo in a south region match in Montevallo, Ala. The game will kick-off at 6:00 p.m. ET at Montevallo’s University Field.
