St. Petersburg, Fla. (August 24, 2006) – The Saint Leo University women's soccer team (1-0) defeated Eckerd College (0-1) on the road Thursday night to give head coach Ged O'Connor a victory in his head coaching debut.
Freshman Hannah Beard (Liverpool, England) came off the bench to score both goals in the game, as sophomore Lauren Hudson (Odessa, Fla.) earned her fourth career shutout in goal for the Lions.
Beard opened the scoring just four minutes after making her collegiate debut, as she headed home a pass from sophomore Bridget Godwin (Ocean Springs, Miss.).
The Lions carried the 1-0 lead into the half-time, which included a 30-minute delay due to severe weather.
Eckerd continued to battle and Triton goalkeeper Melinda Montano made a total of 13 saves on the evening. However, the Lions sealed the victory in the 87th minute when Beard was on target again, cutting through the defense before finishing beyond Montano for her second goal of the night.
The SLU women's soccer team will return to action this Sunday when it hosts Thomas University in the first half of a doubleheader, which will also feature the SLU men versus the Thomas women. The doubleheader will begin with the women kicking off at 2:30 p.m. at University Field.
