Tampa, Fla. (October 29, 2006) – The No. 18 Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (14-3-1) fell to the No. 8 University of Tampa (15-2-1) by a score of 4-3 in a double-overtime thriller in Sunday’s Sunshine State Conference Tournament Final at Tampa’s Pepin Stadium.

The Spartans wrapped up the SSC double-championship, as they won both the regular season and tournament titles in 2006.  Shelby Kuni scored the game-winning goal just 21-seconds into the second overtime period to cap off a sensational match.

Saint Leo midfielder Bridget Godwin (So., Ocean Springs, Miss.) scored two goals for the visiting Lions, while Hannah Beard (Fr., Liverpool, England) and Sara Macko (Fr., Brandon, Fla.) each had a pair of assists.

The Lions had led 2-0 inside the first 12 minutes of the match, as Poyssick scored in the fifth minute and Godwin doubled the advantage in the 12th-minute.

The Spartans came racing back to send the two teams into the locker room all square at 2-2 with goals from Kara Rasmussen and Kuni in the 21st and 38th minutes, respectively.

After the break, Tampa took its first lead of the afternoon when Tournament MVP Samantha Robinson scored an unassisted goal to give the hosts a 3-2 lead.

Saint Leo forced the game into extra time when a well played ball from Beard found Macko down the left side.  The freshman’s cross was met by Godwin who put it beyond UT ‘keeper Shannon Aitken for her second goal of the game.

In the first overtime period neither side could find the breakthrough, and immediately off the second overtime kick-off Tampa forward Jocelyn Charette played a cross to the far post.  Robinson took the ball down and played it square for Kuni to put home for the game-winning strike.

The 2006 All-Tournament Team featured only players from the two finalists.  Saint Leo players Jessica Lebohner, Evelina Viiri, Poyssick, Beard and Godwin were all named to the post-tournament team.

The Lions now await the announcement of the NCAA regional selections on Monday.  Please visit SaintLeoLions.com for up-to-date information on the announcement.
