Boca Raton, Fla. (October 7, 2006) – A goal and an assist from freshman forward Hannah Beard (Liverpool, England) led the Saint Leo University women’s soccer team (9-2-1, 4-2 SSC) to a 2-0 win over Lynn University (6-5-1, 2-2 SSC) at the McCusker Sports Complex in Boca Raton on Saturday.
Saint Leo earned its eighth shutout of the season, as goalkeeper Lauren Hudson (So., Odessa, Fla.) posted her seventh clean sheet by making three saves.
Bridget Godwin’s (So., Ocean Springs, Miss.) 24th minute goal was all Hudson would need, as her second goal of the year proved to be the game-winner. Beard worked well down the left before cutting past a defender and pulling the ball back from the goal line, which was guided in by Godwin for a 1-0 Lions’ lead.
Beard turned goal scorer in the second half, as her 59th minute goal was a well-worked effort between the striker and midfielder Jennifer O’Connor (Jr., Fernandina Beach, Fla.). The two worked a pair of one-twos before Beard dispatched a shot beyond Lynn goalkeeper Jennifer Shropshire for her team-leading eighth goal of the year.
Saint Leo will return home this week to host Palm Beach Atlantic University in a non-conference match at University Field on Wednesday, October 11. Opening kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. and the match will be broadcast live on the Internet. Please visit www.SaintLeoLions.com for “Listen Live” links.
