Six Lions Score as Saint Leo Takes on Fifth Nationally-Ranked Opponent
GAFFNEY, S.C. – Freshman goalie Kaylyn Kearns earned a season high 14 saves, but the No. 3 Limestone College Saints proved to be too much for the Saint Leo women's lacrosse team on Thursday afternoon, handing the Lions an 18-8 loss at Saints Field. The loss drops Saint Leo to a mark of 8-7 on the season, while the Saints remain undefeated and advance to a record of 15-0.
The game marks the fifth ranked opponent the Lions have taken on this season.
Kearns' 14 saves marked a career high for the native of Orlando, Fla. as she played a full game between the pipes. On the opposite end of the field, six Lions scored en route to their eight goal total on the day. Emily Pittenger and Kelsey Burns led the team with two apiece, while Alix Murray, Allie Sheftall, Christina Minneci, and Caroline Fraser each scored once. Sheftall led the team with two assists, while Murray added one of her own.
The Saints were led by Katie Farrell, who netted a game high five goals, and added an assist for a six point afternoon. In goal, Sydney Teeter earned the win, making three saves while allowing seven goals in 47 minutes of play. Jane Bartlett closed out the contest earning one save while allowing one goal in 13 minutes of play.
Limestone pulled out to a quick four goal lead, but a goal by Sheftall off of a feed from Murray put the Lions on the scoreboard with 26:56 on the clock. Limestone scored two more, but Pittenger placed a ball in cage with 21:09 on the board to set the score at 6-2.
Limestone fired off five straight over the ensuing 12 minutes to extend its lead by nine, 11-2, but Burns and Pittenger each converted a free position shot to close out the half with a score of 11-4.
The second period saw the nationally-ranked Saints outscore the Lions 7-4, closing out the game with a 10 goal advantage.
The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, April 19, when they take on Converse College in their final road game of the season. Game time against the Valkyries is set for 11 a.m.
