Millsap Makes Nine Saves Facing 15 Shots on Goal
SAINT LEO, FLA. – The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team picked up a regional win over Fort Lewis on Thursday evening, defeating the Skyhawks 9-6 at University Turf Stadium. The win advances the Lions to a record of 7-4, while Fort Lewis drops to a mark of 5-4 on the season.
Kelsey Burns led the way for the Green and Gold, scoring her third hat trick of the season to help the Lions to victory. Allie Sheftall matched Burns in points, scoring two goals and adding an assist, while Joanna Chadwick, Alix Murray, Christina Minneci, and Bethanny Jolly each scored once. Chadwick and Caroline Fraser both earned one assist, rounding out the Lions' scoring efforts on the night.
The Skyhawks were led by Jessica Norby, who tallied two goals and two assists for a game best four points. Marissa Dicecco, Brook Wineland, Ellie Carpenter, and Ally Kvidera each scored once, while Jam Vertner tallied an assist.
Sheftall led the team with four draw controls, while Brittany Millsap grabbed a team high five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Minneci scooped up four graound balls of her own, while Cassie Miller and Chadwick each picked up three.
Millsap played a full 60 minutes in cage for Saint Leo, allowing just six goals while making nine saves on 21 shots and 15 shots on frame. Her adversary, Alyssa Spencer, allowed nine goals while making nine saves after seeing a total of 21 shots and 18 shots on goal from the Lions.
Saint Leo jumped out to a one goal lead thanks to a goal by Burns at the 24:45 mark, but Kvidera knotted the score at 1-1 four minutes later with an unassisted goal. The Lions then fired off three more goals to pull ahead to a 4-1 lead with 5:19 to go before the half, but a goal by the Skyhawks at the 2:39 mark closed out the first half with the Lions holding onto a 4-2 lead.
Fort Lewis netted the first goal of the second half, pulling to within one of Saint Leo, 4-3, but another three goal run by the Lions extended the lead to 7-3 with 15:03 to go in the game. Fort Lewis broke the Lions' streak with a goal of their own a minute later, but two more goals by the Green and Gold gave the Lions a five goal advantage, 9-4, with 9:55 left.
Fort Lewis closed out the game with two more goals, but it wasn't enough to overcome a resilient Saint Leo squad, who earned their seventh victory of the season.
